Atherosclerosis develops more favorably when there is persistent excess cholesterol. LDL is also referred to as "bad cholesterol" due to its high cholesterol level. Lipoprotein(a), or Lp(a), is another risk factor whose levels are largely determined by heredity and which might increase the risk of atherosclerosis in a family. HDL, on the other hand, is referred to as the "good cholesterol" since it aids in removing deposits from blood vessels.
