Toyota wants to dominate the high-performance vehicle market with its GR sub-brand, but for those looking for something less extreme – and more affordable – the Japanese car-maker will also offer a range of GR Sport models, and the first of them is this sporty little SUV.

The new Toyota C-HR GR Sport is a small SUV priced from $37,665 (plus on-road costs) and has a more bombastic look thanks to a tough new body kit, which includes new-look headlights and a cheekier grille surrounded by a sportier, lower front bumper.

Bigger 19-inch alloy wheels fitted with grippier tyres are supported by a recalibration sports suspension, which is designed to make the city SUV handle more confidently.

There’s plenty of interior eye-candy too, including a GR-branded steering wheel and engine start/stop button, plus sports seats and loads of GR logos – you get the picture.

Sadly the Toyota C-HR GR Sport does not come with the mad 200kW turbo-petrol three-cylinder from the GR Yaris. Instead it’s offered exclusively with the same equipment as the entry-level GXL grade and powered by the same front-drive 90kW petrol-electric powertrain as the top-shelf C-HR Hybrid 2WD Koba CVT.
