The Virtues of Jumu‘ah (Friday) in the Blessed Month of Sha‘ban
All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, his family, his companions, and all those who follow him until the Day of Judgment.
Islam is a religion that gives special importance to sacred times, blessed days, and spiritually significant months. Among these, the month of Sha‘ban and the day of Jumu‘ah (Friday) both hold an exceptional status. When these two blessings come together—Jumu‘ah occurring in the month of Sha‘ban—the opportunity for mercy, forgiveness, and spiritual elevation becomes even greater.
This description explores the fazilat (virtues), importance, wisdom, and spiritual benefits of observing and honoring Jumu‘ah during the sacred month of Sha‘ban, according to the Qur’an, Hadith, and Islamic teachings.
Understanding the Month of Sha‘ban
Sha‘ban is the eighth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, coming between Rajab and Ramadan. It is a month often neglected by people, yet it was deeply valued by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
Usamah ibn Zayd (RA) reported:
“I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I do not see you fasting in any month as much as you fast in Sha‘ban.’ He said: ‘That is a month people neglect between Rajab and Ramadan. It is a month in which deeds are raised to the Lord of the worlds, and I love that my deeds be raised while I am fasting.’”
(Sunan an-Nasa’i)
This hadith shows that Sha‘ban is a month of preparation, reflection, and spiritual training before Ramadan. It is a time when deeds are presented before Allah, making it crucial for believers to increase good actions.
The Significance of Jumu‘ah (Friday) in Islam
Jumu‘ah is not just a weekly holiday—it is the best day of the week in Islam.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“The best day on which the sun has risen is Friday. On it Adam was created, on it he was admitted to Paradise, on it he was expelled from it, and the Hour will not be established except on Friday.”
(Sahih Muslim)
Friday is a day of:
Congregational prayer (Salat al-Jumu‘ah)
Acceptance of supplications
Forgiveness of sins
Increased blessings and mercy
Allah Himself mentions Jumu‘ah in the Qur’an:
“O you who believe! When the call is proclaimed for the prayer on Friday, hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave off trade.”
(Surah Al-Jumu‘ah 62:9)
When Jumu‘ah Comes in the Month of Sha‘ban
When Jumu‘ah coincides with Sha‘ban, it becomes a double blessing. The sanctity of the day merges with the spirituality of the month, creating a powerful opportunity for believers to draw closer to Allah.
This combination encourages Muslims to:
Renew their intentions before Ramadan
Seek forgiveness sincerely
Increase acts of worship
Strengthen their connection with the Qur’an
Send abundant blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ
Fazilat of Worship on Jumu‘ah in Sha‘ban
1. Increased Acceptance of Duas
Friday contains a special hour during which duas are accepted. Scholars differ on its exact timing, but it is widely believed to be:
Between Asr and Maghrib, or
While the Imam is on the pulpit until the prayer ends
Making heartfelt duas during this time in Sha‘ban—especially for forgiveness, guidance, and preparation for Ramadan—is extremely virtuous.
2. Forgiveness of Sins
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever performs wudu properly, then comes to Jumu‘ah, listens attentively, and remains silent, his sins between that Friday and the next will be forgiven.”
(Sahih Muslim)
When this forgiveness is sought in Sha‘ban, a month already associated with mercy and accountability, the hope for Allah’s forgiveness multiplies.
3. Sending Durood (Salawat) on the Prophet ﷺ
Friday is the best day to send Durood Sharif upon the Prophet ﷺ.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Increase your blessings upon me on Friday, for your blessings are presented to me.”
(Abu Dawood)
Sending Durood in Sha‘ban is especially meaningful, as Sha‘ban is the month in which the Prophet ﷺ increased his worship and devotion.
4. Recitation of the Qur’an
Reciting the Qur’an on Jumu‘ah is a Sunnah, and Sha‘ban is the ideal month to reconnect with the Qur’an before Ramadan.
Many companions used Sha‘ban to increase Qur’an recitation, preparing their hearts for Ramadan. Combining Qur’an recitation with Jumu‘ah brings tranquility, guidance, and immense reward.
5. Preparing Spiritually for Ramadan
Sha‘ban is like the warm-up before Ramadan, and Jumu‘ah acts as a weekly spiritual checkpoint.
On Fridays in Sha‘ban, believers can:
Reflect on their shortcomings
Make sincere tawbah (repentance)
Set goals for Ramadan
Ask Allah for strength and consistency
Special Acts to Perform on Jumu‘ah in Sha‘ban
Here are some recommended action
Sending Durood excessively
Avoiding sins and useless talk
Each of these actions carries reward on Jumu‘ah, and even more so in Sha‘ban.
Connection with Laylat-un-Nisf Sha‘ban
Sha‘ban also includes the 15th night (Laylat-un-Nisf Sha‘ban), a night associated with Allah’s mercy and forgiveness.
