The Winston-Salem Department of Transportation (DOT) hosted a ribbon-cutting for the Twin City Trail (formerly known as the Salem Parkway Multi-Use Path) on Aug. 28, at 10 a.m. on Liberty Street between Cemetery and First streets.

The public was invited to attend the event, which will celebrated another key milestone in the city’s commitment to building safer, more accessible, and more connected transportation infrastructure. The Twin City Trail is part of a long-range vision to create a continuous network for pedestrians, cyclists, and other non-motorized users, linking neighborhoods, parks, transit routes, and commercial areas across the city. The path is designed to support recreation, improve safety, and promote environmentally sustainable transportation options.

DOT led a campaign to adopt a formal name for the Salem Parkway Multi-use Path. The campaign was first launched by seeking assistance from the city’s Bicycle / Pedestrian / Active Mobility Advisory Committee. Committee members engaged with residents and community groups that have an interest in active transportation, outdoor recreation, fitness training, historical heritage, and community placemaking. The committee’s outreach resulted in a list of approximately 30 proposed trail names. From this list, committee members and DOT staff voted on their preferred names. The top four trail names moved forward to a community poll, which was shared on the city's social media platforms, resulting in over 740 votes. The name chosen was Twin City Trail.
