He drives out to find the third portal. He never reaches it.

A rock. A broken suspension arm. A disconnected steering rod. The truck is dead. He is too far from base to walk. The sun is going down.

He locks the doors. Turns on the heating. Puts the iron pipe in his lap. And waits.

Then the scratching starts.

Something on the roof. Metal scraping against metal. A dark tentacle slides across the windshield. Then a face. Multiple reflective eyes pressed against the glass. Looking at him. Studying him.

It tests the door handle.

Then it starts spinning.

Dark grey web — strand by strand — across the windows, the doors, the wheels. The truck is being cocooned. Sealed shut. He is inside watching the last light disappear behind layers of alien silk.

He was not hunted. He was packaged.

Morning comes. He tears through the web with his bare hands and the iron pipe. The spider is gone. The truck is wrapped in a grey shell. He rips it all away.

Then he does something impossible. A rock for an anvil. The iron pipe for a hammer. He beats the suspension straight. Wires the steering rod back together. It holds. Barely.

He drives home with web still trailing from the truck.

But the expedition failed. Portal three — unreached. And now the spider knows his routes. It knew where he was going. It was waiting.

The trap was set before he left.
