About the Speech:

Robert Cooper is the author of two influential studies on the modern world: The Post-Modern State and the World Order (2000) and The Breaking of Nations: Order and Chaos in the Twenty-First Century (2003). He contends that, in the modern world, power and honour derive from the ability to create the rules and institutions of global governance. In this context, he reflected on the EU as a foreign policy actor, taking a long term perspective and analysing its strengths and weaknesses.

About the Speaker:

Mr. Cooper is a distinguished European diplomat and thought leader. He worked for ten years on EU foreign policy, under Javier Solana and then Catherine Ashton. In this capacity, he acted as facilitator in the groundbreaking dialogue between Serbia and Kosovo in 2012/2013. He remains a Special Adviser to the High Representative on Burma/Myanmar.

Between 1970 and 2002 he served in the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office, including as the UK's Special Representative in Afghanistan.

He is currently a visiting Professor at LSE IDEAS.
