'Alternative & Sustainable Photography'

Eco-conscious photographic artist Josie Purcell will share how her photographic practice is driven by our place within, and impact on, the natural world and our connections to natural resources such as water, soil, and sand.

She will discuss how she strives to use photographic processes and techniques to lessen her photographic footprint, and how she is fascinated by the potential for abstract photography to initiate action in regard to environmental/humanitarian matters.

Josie has worked in various photographic roles including as a medical photographer, mini-lab technician, and short-filmmaker.

She is a qualified and experienced journalist and a communications manager for an environmental charity.

She gained a distinction in her MA in Photography in 2018, established Cornwall's participatory photographic 'sunroom' ShutterPod in 2012, and in 2021 began the Photopocene podcast to share eco-conscious photography in an audio way.

Josie has exhibited internationally and has received various environment-related commissions such as Of Earth - For Earth which considered the potential for sustainable mining and 6000 Flowers with Cornwall's AONB and Exeter University's Environment and Sustainability Institute.

Her photographic practice focuses on topics such as land access rights and natural resource challenges.

In Conversation
Purcell’s photographs are beautifully captivating, making use of metaphor, thus gently hailing the viewer, to engage and reflect upon wider connections to Nature, which at first sight may not be apparent.

The commitment to alternative processes, creates a refreshingly hybrid, and sustainable approach to photography.
Purcell makes skilful use of style and design, including colour, patterns, textures and symbolism, as powerful signifiers underpinning context and message to engage the audience.

The vivid and dynamic photographs create a joyful and well crafted kaleidoscope on key questions of our time.

Extending her creative practice, Purcell established Photopocene, a podcast series interviewing a range of alternative and eco-conscious photographic artist practitioners in thought provoking dialogue.

In Conversation will allow us to gaining valuable insight into her creative practice and working methods.
