Skull Island | Never seen before culture of Trunyan Village in Bali,Indonesia

Trunyan, a Bali Aga village nestled on the eastern shore of Lake Batur, is renowned for its unique funeral customs and the presence of a "skull island." Unlike the traditional Balinese Hindu practice of cremation, the people of Trunyan leave their dead bodies to decompose naturally under a sacred banyan tree known as the Taru Menyan. The tree's fragrant leaves are believed to neutralize the odor of decomposition, allowing the village to exist in peaceful coexistence with its deceased residents.  

Over time, the skeletons and skulls gradually emerge from the bamboo cages where they were initially placed. These remains are then collected and arranged on a raised platform within the cemetery, creating a macabre yet fascinating display. The sight of these exposed bones, alongside the serene beauty of the lake and the surrounding mountains, creates a unique and otherworldly atmosphere.

Visitors to Trunyan can reach the village by boat across the lake, venturing through a scenic landscape dotted with small farms and traditional houses. The journey itself is a tranquil experience, offering glimpses of rural Balinese life. Once on the island, visitors can explore the cemetery, learn about the local customs, and witness the unique way in which the village honors its departed.  

The Trunyan cemetery is not for the faint of heart, but it offers a glimpse into a fascinating and culturally significant tradition. It serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the diverse ways in which different cultures approach death and mourning.
