Nick Klase - CEO & Co-founder of Fluence Bioengineering

Bio: Nick Klase is a pioneer in the development and implementation of photobiological lighting systems. He focuses on applying creative solutions to solve real-world farming challenges. He designed the world’s largest indoor vertical farm in 2011, and he continually conducts cutting-edge research to design the most efficient lighting system for plant growth. Prior to Fluence, Nick was the CEO/co-founder of BML Horticulture, vice president and founder of horticulture at Illumitex, and a general manager at Acuity Brands Lighting, the largest lighting company in North America.

Presentation title: The Fundamentals of Light and its Impact on Vertical Farming

Presentation abstract: From photochemical reactions and crop production to energy efficiency and operating costs, light is the single most critical factor impacting the success (or failure) of a vertical farm harvest and business. Beginning with the basics of “what is light?” and concluding with an in-depth overview on quantifying and qualifying lighting differentials – from white light to purple light and top light to side light – this session will provide attendees a crash course in applying photobiology and economic principles to build and manage a denser, healthier, greener vertical farm.
