On this first step of The Variant Chronicles, we begin a fresh Human Noble timeline in the ashes of Highever's fall. Arryn Cousland walks out of a ruined house carrying no inheritance, only debt: to the family that died keeping their oaths, and to a kingdom already buckling under the coming Blight.

🔥 THE NIGHT OF BETRAYAL — HIGHEVER BURNS Arryn—a precision stealth archer—wakes to the sound of steel. Arl Howe’s forces have infiltrated Castle Cousland to exterminate the family while their army is away. Arryn rescues his mother, Eleanor, only to discover the brutal slaughter of his nephew and sister-in-law. Eleanor vows vengeance as they fight toward Teyrn Bryce Cousland.

⚔️ A FATHER'S FINAL WORDS — THE WEIGHT OF A NAME In the main hall, a mortally wounded Bryce entrusts Arryn with the Cousland legacy. Duncan offers conscription as the only escape. Eleanor stays behind to buy time, dying with her husband as Arryn escapes into the smoke—the last Cousland standing, armed only with a bow and a vow of justice.

🏰 ARRIVAL AT OSTAGAR — ANCIENT PROPHECIES Arryn reaches Ostagar, where King Cailan prepares for battle. Here he meets Alistair, a templar-trained Warden whose loyalty becomes Arryn’s anchor. The mood is a mix of Cailan’s naive confidence and the veterans' grim warnings of the rising Fifth Blight.

🌫️ THE KORCARI WILDS — CORRUPTION & POWER Sent to retrieve ancient treaties, Arryn’s stealth-archer build shines in the fog. In the ruins, they encounter the apostate Morrigan and her mother, Flemeth, who saves them from an ogre’s rage. The treaties are secured; the path to the Joining is open.

🩸 THE JOINING RITUAL — SACRIFICE Arryn drinks the darkspawn blood, surviving the toxic rite to become a Grey Warden. He is haunted by visions of the Archdemon and the coming tide of corruption. He is no longer a noble; he is a weapon against the Blight.

⚔️ THE BATTLE OF OSTAGAR — THE GREAT BETRAYAL Arryn scales the Tower of Ishal to light the signal beacon. After a desperate climb through darkspawn hordes, he lights the fire—only to watch Teyrn Loghain retreat, abandoning the King and the Wardens to their deaths. Cailan and Duncan fall as the horde swarms the tower.

🐉 SALVATION IN FLAME — A WARDEN RISES Flemeth rescues Arryn and Alistair in dragon form. They wake as the sole survivors of the massacre. With Loghain seizing the throne and branding Wardens traitors, Arryn must navigate a kingdom that has lost its heart. The hunt for vengeance and survival begins.
