I’ve told stories about my past before, but this time, I wanted to take a different approach. Instead of just telling you what my life was like, I wanted to show you—documentary-style—what my childhood looked like, where I spent my time, and the people who were part of my world. At first, this journey felt like a comedic nostalgia trip. I linked up with some old friends, revisited the places where we used to hang out, and set out on a mission to locate my mugshot (because yes, there was a time when I was getting into that kind of trouble). But as the trip went on, I started seeing Albany through a different lens—and let me tell you, it was eye-opening.

Some places hadn’t changed at all. They were still exactly how I left them, frozen in time. Others? Completely unrecognizable—either abandoned, replaced, or somehow even worse than I remembered. And in the midst of all that, I started reflecting on the life I could have had if I had never left.

As I walked through my old neighborhood, I couldn’t shake the what ifs. What if I had never left Albany? What if I had stayed in the same cycle? What if I had never realized there was more out there for me?

There’s something unsettling about going back to a place where you spent your most vulnerable years. The memories come flooding back, both the good and the bad. You remember the laughter, the friendships, the late nights doing stupid things—but you also remember the pain, the struggles, the things you tried to forget.

At one point, I even started wondering—was I just lucky? Did I just happen to break out while others didn’t? Or was it always possible, and I just made a choice that others never got the chance to make?

This episode isn’t just about me. It’s about every person who grew up in a place they felt trapped in—and what it feels like to go back after finally escaping.
