Ever since she started stand-up in 2014, friends have described Emily Browning’s act as “a little unhinged.” Instead of sticking with her jokes as scripted, Emily would often veer away from her act to deal with chatty audience members, or get derailed by the psychological state of the person
in the front row. Maybe it stems from her time passing out religious fliers for her church on street corners. Maybe it’s just Emily. Either way, she’s always had the ability to get something delightful out of each interaction. And honestly, maybe it’s a curse.

It wasn't until April, 30th 2022, after a day she’d spent making balloon art at the Rainforest Cafe, that she asked a show booker if she could just, "make some balloons and riff off whatever they ask for." The booker agreed. And the show went well—REALLY well after posting it online. As in, Emily
gained 100,000 followers and became TikTok's Funny Balloon Girl seemingly overnight. When the Lyric Hyperion Theatre approached her to do a special, she decided instead to do an entirely off-the-cuff hour, surviving only off balloon requests from the audience, a few songs, and her
wits.

This is the directorial debut for Mike Bridenstine, a veteran of the Chicago and Los Angeles comedy scenes. He wanted to produce a unique and intimate performance that captured the authentic look and feel of live comedy in LA in 2025. What he got was an audience toiling with their identities, just trying to survive, and receiving some fantastic balloon art along the way. This special captures so many of Emily’s unique set of skills. But really, she’s just scraping the surface.
