Bhojpuri Gārī folk song from Suriname

The Gārī song genre is one that was often heard at the Māțī Khor (ritual of the digging of the dirt), the Hardī ke rāt or Tilwān (Night of applying turmeric and mustard oil). It was a prevalent Bhojpuri tradition within the Indian diaspora. A gārī was a song charged with gārīs or taunts to the relatives of the bride and groom that were quite salacious and heavy with sexual innuendos. Chocolade hai dulahin tor phūwā, chocolade,

Ū to kare hartāl, nahin mānat hai bāt
(She enjoys, she does not listen)
Ū ta ghūmat bajār
(She roamed the market)

(She roamed all night)
