Holography relates a quantum theory of gravity in certain space -- times known as anti de Sitter spaces, to an ordinary quantum field theory in one less dimensions. In this talk we shall discuss how such correspondences are discovered and how they are tested, giving special emphasis to testing those aspects which are sensitive to the quantum effects of gravity.
