作曲者喬治.蓋希文(George Gershwin)出生在紐約市。他的音樂有20世紀初紐約爵士年代的華麗風格。他將古典音樂以及爵士樂再加上黑人藍調的風格結合起來，寫了很多爵士樂的標準曲目的歌曲。
Summertime 出自蓋希文在1935年所寫的歌劇波吉與貝絲（Porgy & Bess），這首歌劇描寫美國南方非裔美國人的底層生活。在歌劇中是一首哄寶寶睡覺的搖籃曲，歌曲以黑人藍調的方式，道盡底層人士對不可及的夢想生活的嚮往。
