In collaboration with the John Rylands Library at The University of Manchester, now a global partner with UT Austin, and opening in Spring 2026, Lives and Literacy in Ancient Egypt will be an immersive exhibition that brings to life the voices of a multilingual, multicultural, multi-religious society from Greco-Roman Egypt.

For the first time in North America, the public will be able to see the world’s earliest known New Testament fragment (known as the St. John fragment), as well as the Ransom Center’s rare collection of papyri fragments and other fascinating artifacts from Greco-Roman Egypt. This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see such a comprehensive exhibition of ancient times.

The exhibition provided our preservation and conservation teams with the opportunity to suitably house our collection of papyri. This will give researchers and students better access to study these ancient fragments and will allow us to display them in our galleries for the very first time.
