My name is Tom Zimmerman and I am an Illinois class action lawyer. I have over 20 years’ experience in civil litigation, including winning multi-million-dollar verdicts.

In 2015, I filed a class action lawsuit against the state of Illinois and the Illinois state lottery. At that time, there was a budget stalemate in Illinois. The Republican governor and Democratic controlled legislature could not agree on a budget.

Meanwhile, thousands of people continued to buy lottery tickets. However, because of the budget impasse, Illinois was unable to pay those who won the lottery.

As you can see in this series of videos, countless lottery winners went from joy at winning money in the lottery to dismay at their inability to collect their winnings.

As such, Zimmerman Law Offices filed a class action lawsuit against the state of Illinois to force the state to pay the winners. We demanded not only payment of their winnings, but also interest, and injunctive relief to halt lottery ticket sales until Illinois started paying lottery winners.

A high-profile settlement conference took place between my office, the judge, and representatives from Governor Rauner’s office, the Illinois lottery department, the Illinois Controller’s office.

We ultimately settled the lawsuit. As part of the settlement, the governor agreed to sign a bill allowing funding of the Illinois Lottery budget and the winners were paid their prize money.
