Overview

What the Jeep Wrangler lacks in driving refinement, it makes up for in choice. Two doors or four? Hardtop or soft? What about a V-6, a turbo four-cylinder, a monster V-8, or a plug-in-hybrid powertrain? All that and more is available for mixing and matching. Sure, the Ford Bronco and Toyota 4Runner offer more comfort and better on-road manners, but that's not what attracts folks to the Wrangler. It is its reputation for off-roading distilled, improved over the years with the availability of things like power windows and air conditioning—and now even decent infotainment—but retaining the look, character, and capability that date back to its inception as part of the WWII war effort.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The standard 285-hp 3.6-liter V-6 pairs with a six-speed manual or an optional eight-speed automatic. The latter transmission is standard on four- and eight-cylinder models. A 470-hp, 6.4-liter V-8 is available only in the wild Rubicon 392 Final Edition and comes paired with an eight-speed auto. There's a 270-hp 2.0-liter turbo four as well as a 375-hp plug-in-hybrid 4xe powertrain, which we review separately. Wranglers are born off-road ready, so part-time four-wheel drive is standard across most of the range; a full-time system is available on Sport, Sahara, and Rubicon models and standard on the 392. Although the Wrangler's handling has improved, it's still old-school and truck like in comparison with today's refined S UV's and pickups. The ride in the four-door is acceptably smooth over rough surfaces, but the shorter-wheelbase two-door has a tendency to buck over the larger bumps.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

It's not the most spacious or accommodating SUV available, but the Wrangler provides a seamless blend of vintage and modern Jeep character. A commanding view of the road—or trail—makes for easy maneuverability, but the view rearward is obscured by thick roof pillars, roll bars, and various grab handles. Need a better view? Just pop the top and remove the doors. Seated close to the upright windshield, the driver and front-seat passenger face a narrow, squared-off dashboard punctuated by round air vents and chunky switchgear for the climate-control system, power windows, and infotainment. As an errand runner, the Wrangler offers enough room for groceries and gear, but be aware that its rear seats don't fold flush with the cargo floor like most other S UV's do. As you might expect, there's a significant cargo-hauling trade-off for going with the classic two-door Wrangler versus the larger Unlimited four-door model. Fitting just two of our carry-on cases behind the two-door's back seat—versus 10 for the four-door—means packing light if you're adventuring with friends.
