প্রিয়নাথ মুখোপাধ্যায় এক বাঙালি গোয়েন্দা। ফেলুদা,ব্যোমকেশ বা কিরীটীর মোতো কোনো কাল্পনিক চরিত্র নয়। প্রিয়নাথ ছিলেন ব্রিটিশ আমলের লালবাজারে ডিটেক্টিভ ডিপার্টমেন্টের সুদক্ষ দারোগা। ১৮৭৮ থেকে ১৯১১ সাল অবধি প্রিয়নাথ চাকরি করেন কলকাতা পুলিশে এবং নিজের দীর্ঘ তেত্রিশ বছরের কর্মজীবনে নিজের দেখা এবং অনুসন্ধান করা নানান অপরাধ নিয়ে শুরু করেন বাংলার প্রথম ক্রাইম ম্যাগাজিন দারোগার দপ্তর। আমরা জানি তার দারোগা জীবনের প্রতিটা ঘটনাই তৎকালিন সময়ে শুধুমাত্র তীক্ষ্ণ বুদ্ধিকে কাজে লাগিয়ে কী নিপুন ভাবে সমাধান করেছেন বিভিন্ন কেশ। আজকের গল্পটি তেও আপনারা দেখবেন প্রিয়নাথের বুদ্ধির খেল।
