This error is very common yet is easily avoided. Fixing comma splices is very easy once you learn how to identify them.

To fix a comma splice, we can break sentences into two. We can add a period and separate the comma splice into two sentences. We could also add a semicolon if the sentences are closely related. Alternatively, we could add a relevant coordinating conjunction (for, and, nor, but, yet, so, or).

A comma splice occurs when two independent clauses are joined by a comma without a coordinating conjunction or appropriate punctuation.

Comma Splice Example:
It's a beautiful day out, there's not a cloud in the sky!

This sentence is punctuated incorrectly. We have two independent clauses joined by a comma. We could fix this by separating it into two sentences, adding a semicolon, or adding a coordinating conjunction.

Corrected Example:
It's a beautiful day out. There's not a cloud in the sky!
