Описание к видео Doctor explains BLACK EYE | Treatment at home and when to seek medical care

In this video Doctor O'Donovan explains key things you need to know about a black eye.

A black eye, also known as a periorbital hematoma, is a bruise around the eye, typically caused by a blow to the face. It's essentially a bruise caused by broken blood vessels and blood pooling under the skin. While generally not serious and often healing within a few weeks, it's important to know how to care for a black eye and when to seek medical attention.

Causes of a black eye:
Most commonly caused by blunt trauma, such as a punch, fall, or sports injury. They can also result from cosmetic or dental procedures, or even sinus infections.

Symptoms:
Pain and swelling around the eye.
Bruising, which can change color over time (red, purple, yellow, green, or black).
Blurred vision, headache, or dizziness may also occur.

Treatment:
Immediate: Apply a cold compress (ice pack or bag of frozen peas wrapped in a cloth) for 10-20 minutes at a time, several times a day, for the first 1-2 days.
After 2 days: Switch to warm compresses to help reduce swelling and promote healing.
Pain Relief: Over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen (Tylenol) can be used, but ibuprofen or aspirin should be avoided as they can increase bleeding.
Rest: Avoid strenuous activity and protect the eye from further injury.

When to see a doctor:
If you have severe pain, vision changes (blurred vision, double vision, loss of vision), or severe headache.
If you experience dizziness, loss of consciousness, or vomiting.
If the white of the eye is red, or the pupil is a different shape or size than the other eye.
If the black eye doesn't improve within 2-3 weeks, or if the area around the eye is warm or leaking pus.
If you have a fever or feel hot and shivery.

Important Considerations:
1. Most black eyes heal on their own without complications.
2. Avoid rubbing the eye, as this can worsen the injury.
3. Be cautious with pain medications, and follow the instructions on the label.
4. If you have any concerns about your black eye, it's always best to seek medical advice.
