Eight trade associations and business chambers have said that calls to reduce reliance on foreign workers would hurt Singapore's economy. These workers account for the highest number of COVID-19 cases in the country. Industry groups that represent over 50,000 firms are urging the government to take a cautious approach, as they are concerned that cutting migrant worker numbers could make doing business more difficult and threaten jobs. As of 2019, there were close to 1.17 million migrant workers in Singapore, with 300,000 in construction alone.
