Ba Duan Jin or The Eight Brocades emerged before the Song dynasty (960-1279) and developed into a formal exercise in Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911). It is primarily designated as a form of medical qigong, meant to improve health.
This ancient stretching form is especially beneficial for tendons and ligaments. The movements couple tension with relaxation and activeness with quietness. It also concentrates on the strong and healthy functioning of the internal organs, helps to release blockages along all 12 meridians and improves balance.
Traditionally it contains both a standing and seated set of eight postures each, but nowadays the standing version is by far the most widely practiced. There are different versions of the Ba Duan Jin and the particular order in which the eight pieces are executed can vary. This one is a Shaolin version.
Note: in the last movement balance on your toes before falling back on the heels gently; strech arms, hands and wrists backwards in hook-hands (all fingers touch the thumb).

2. Drawing the Arrow (Horizontal Stretch)
3. Separating Heaven and Earth (Diagonal Stretch)

5. Big Bear Turns to Side (Leg-Torso Connection)
6. Bending backwards and touching toes (Front-Back Stretch)
