Air Transat Flight 236, an Airbus A330-200 was a flight between Toronto and Lisbon on August 24, 2001 with 306 passengers and crew members on board.

The Incident:
The flight left Toronto at 8:52pm. About 4 hours later into the flight, a hole was punctured in the fuel line causing a fuel leak. It was later discovered that the leak was caused by improper maintenance. The leak was unnoticed by the crew at first until warnings for low oil temperature and high oil pressure began appearing on the computer. Minutes after assessing the situation, the pilots decided to divert to Lajes Air Base in the Azores. About half an hour later, both engines flamed out and the aircraft became a glider. The ram air turbine was deployed to give power to critical instruments, however all hydraulic power was lost meaning that the pilots couldn't use flaps or brakes on touchdown. The pilots were getting concerned because if the plane took too long to get to the airport, they would have to ditch the plane in the sea which could prove fatal if done like Ethiopian Airlines Flight 961. However, the plane managed to glide all the way to the base and landed hard causing 18 injuries. This flight was able to glide further than any aircraft in history, setting a world record.
