Health

The difference between health and disease is not as simple as you may think - health is not just the absence of disease. The definition for health given by the World Health Organisation (WHO) is: Health is the state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity

Disease

A disease is a condition that stops any part of the body from functioning properly. Diseases are a major causes of ill health (other factors which affect health include diet and stress) It is important to remember the term disease can also be used for mental illness (i.e. depression is a mental health disease). There are two main categories of disease - communicable diseases and non-communicable diseases.

Communicable Diseases

When diseases can spread between organisms, we call them communicable diseases (sometimes also called contagious or infectious diseases). Examples include tuberculosis, malaria, HIV, chlamydia etc.

Non-communicable Diseases

Diseases that cannot be spread between people or animals are called non-communicable diseases. Often they are diseases that progressively get worse over a long period of time. Examples include asthma, cancer and coronary artery disease. They can be caused by several things including a poor diet, genes or uncontrollable cell division.
