The Future Tree Nursery and Regional Seed Hub | Westminster Ponds Centre

ReForest London is well known for planting trees in our community, but the minds and hands of specialists and volunteers have been looking at the very beginnings of a tree’s life.

The Seed Hub, for example, is a volunteer-driven program focused on the ethical collecting and growing of seeds from our native trees and shrubs.

With a focus on sourcing climate-adapted seeds, our meticulous seed collection and storage process, led by experts and highly trained volunteers, will ensure regional conservation and restoration projects have access to vital and currently scarce resources.

ReForest London will also be developing an on-site Community Tree Nursery to help increase local supply of native trees for planting, while involving Londoners in the process. More than only trees, it will operate as a learning space and be driven by partnerships with local school boards and community groups.

During the pilot phase, staff will work with hundreds of volunteers of all ages to grow a wide range of native species of trees and shrubs, at various sizes and stages of development.

By connecting with our community, ReForest London hopes to eventually expand up to as many as 50,000 plants per year, enough to meet London’s planting needs, as determined by the municipal urban forest and tree planting strategies, and help foster the growth and diversity of our future urban forests.
