Plasma activation of implants with implaPrep Concept

Описание к видео Plasma activation of implants with implaPrep Concept

Plasma activation of the implant surfaces with implaPrep is a supportive procedure which is applied before inserting the implants into the jawbone. This treatment increases the surface energy and thus improves the wettability of the implant.

For this purpose, a sterile reactor is inserted into the device prior to plasma treatment. The reactor size depends on the implant diameter. The sterile implant is unpacked and connected to the sterile transfer tool on the insertion post, to a tool or to the ISO shaft. This serves both as a mechanical connection during activation to centre the implant in the reactor, as well as for electrical contact.

The transfer tool is now placed in the insertion aid and by applying gentle pressure the implant is lowered into the reactor without endangering the sterility of the operator or the implant itself.

Now the activation process starts, lasting only 45 seconds without significant thermal input. This short plasma treatment leads to a homogeneous activation of the entire implant. The activated implant is then moved out of the reactor with a simple push on the insertion aid, and can be removed from the holder without any further steps.
The now hydrophilic implant can be inserted in the usual way. An immersion angle analysis shows that the water immersion angle has been reduced by 50%, resulting in significantly improved wetting behaviour.

This is clearly demonstrated by comparing the wetting of two implants. On the left side we can see an untreated implant in its pristine condition.
The implant on the right has been subjected to a short homogeneous plasma discharge. When immersed in the test liquid the untreated implant almost repels it, while the liquid on the treated implant is pulled up along the thread against the force of gravity.

The plasma treatment removed carbon adsorbates. This increases the surface energy and improves the wettability of the surface. The improved surface properties of the implant is achieved without changing the surface roughness or the material composition.

Finally, the plasma-activated surface promotes the initial accumulation of osteoblasts thus optimizing osseointegration.
