Song # 24: My sweetheart
recorded at the Amsterdam church De Duif
with Marjolein van der Klauw
audio post production: Reyer Zwart

My Sweetheart

My sweetheart lives in the forest
where trees are tall and nights black
where ravens crow in the morning
at the end of the wayfarer’s path

And when I go there a’ walking
through the meadows and fields
I hear my mother calling
Girl you’d better watch your feet

My sweetheart he makes me coffee
Strong bitter and black
He lifts me up from the kitchen
and carries me into this bed

And there he whispers into my ear
some of he sweetest words I have heard
lifting me high from this treacherous earth
feeding my soul, quenching my thirst
feeding my soul, quenching my thirst

My sweetheart he never asks me
when I’ll be back
he knows I will come running
down the wayfarer’s path

And there he whispers into my ear
some of he sweetest words I have heard
lifting me high from this treacherous earth
feeding my soul, quenching my thirst
feeding my soul, quenching my thirst

How to be complete?
I dream up songs often, but in the half state between sleep and wakefulness, I lose most of them. It takes a very concentrated effort to get from the dream to a piece of paper or a recording device and not loose this subconscious thread. For this one I took a straight route to my desk, found a pen and wrote down seven verses whilst trying not to become too conscious. If I look at what I wrote now, I guess about eighty percent of the song was already there. Maybe it helped that in the dream I was given the song as means of directions to get somewhere. It was important to remember those directions, so I kept singing the song to myself, walking along a meadow, through a derelict house with a courtyard where people were building and through a forest. By repeating the song I would not forget the words and would get where I needed to be. The people in the house tried to distract me, but I just kept singing and made my way.

What the song is about, is still a bit of a mystery to me. It's quite obvious it speaks of a longing for a union of some sorts. Whether that union be physical, spiritual or metaphorical I leave up to you. I am very grateful Marjolein van der Klauw found the time to sing it with me. As far as the union of voices go, there's no place I'd rather be. We recorded the song in De Duif, a church in Amsterdam, with two male saints standing quietly behind us. Towards the end of the song an anonymous churchgoer walked in and slammed some doors, we tried not to get distracted, but just kept singing - to get to where we needed to be.
