Washington County voters to decide on renewing RAP tax for parks and arts

Washington County residents will decide this election whether to renew the RAP tax, a funding source that has supported parks, arts, and recreational facilities in the area for the past decade.

Proponents say the tax is crucial for sustaining local programs and community spaces.

Alberto Herrera, a local resident, voiced support for the tax and the recreational opportunities it supports.

“Anything outdoorsy is great. It’s good for people to get out in the parks and out in natures – it’s really healing,” Herrera said.

The ballot measure won’t raise current tax rates, but would continue the sales and use tax established in 2014 — a 0.1% tax, which is the equivalent of $1 for every $100 spent in Washington County.

The funds are distributed across municipalities in the county for local projects such as trails, bike parks, museums and performing arts centers. If renewed, it will continue the same rate for another ten years.
