Speaker Biography: Khaled Hosseini was born in Kabul, Afghanistan, and when he was 11, his father, a diplomat in the Afghan Foreign Ministry, moved the family to Paris. In 1979, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan, and Hosseini's family sought and was granted asylum in the United States. In 1993, Hosseini earned a medical degree. Ten years later, he published the international best-seller "The Kite Runner." The book was sold in more than 70 countries and spent more than 100 weeks on the New York Times best-seller list. His next novel, "A Thousand Splendid Suns," was a #1 best-seller, and the two books together have sold more than 48 million copies worldwide. Hosseini's newest novel is "And the Mountains Echoed."
