Did you know that ancient people in China invented a remedy for mouth ulcers using watermelon?
They would typically select a ripe watermelon, slice it evenly into thin pieces, and layer the slices in an unglazed clay jar. Then, they’d sprinkle Glauber’s salt between the layers and store the jar in a dry, cool, and well-ventilated place.
If a clay jar wasn’t available, they would use the watermelon itself. They’d cut a slice near the stem to use as a lid, scoop out the flesh and seeds, pour Glauber’s salt inside, put the flesh back in, cover it with the slice, and secure it with bamboo sticks. The watermelon was then hung up to ferment.
As the Glauber’s salt reacted with the watermelon juice, white crystals would form around the mouth of the jar or the watermelon. These crystals were called watermelon frost.
People would regularly collect this frost until no more crystals formed. Watermelon frost was considered a valuable medicinal ingredient, known for its cooling, anti-inflammatory, and pain-relieving properties. It was commonly used to treat sore throats and mouth ulcers.
