सुमन मोरे या कचरावेचक म्हणून पुणे, महाराष्ट्र इथे काम करतात. त्यांचे पालक कामाच्या शोधात आपल्या गावातून पुण्यात आले होते व त्यांनी कचरा वेचण्याचे काम सुरू केले. सुमन या सुमारे 13 वर्षांची होत्या तेव्हा त्या त्यांच्यासोबत जाण्यास सुरवात केली होती. सुमन यांचे पती यांनी आर्थिक हातभार लावला, तर त्यांच्या उत्पन्नाचा मुख्य स्रोत कचरा उचलणे हा होता.

जेव्हा सुमन यांनी काम सुरु केले तेव्हा त्या स्थानिक कचरा डिपॉझिटरीज किंवा सार्वजनिक कचऱ्याच्या डब्यात, रस्त्याच्या कडेला पुनर्वापरयोग्य कचरा उचलत असे. त्यांनी लांब अंतर चालत आणि भोर पासून तिन्ही दिवस काम केले. त्यांची मुले घरी कचरा व्यवस्थित वेगवेगळे करत असतं. या वेगवेगळा केलेल्या कच-यामुळे ते अधिक चांगल्या किंमतीला विकत.

1992-93 मध्ये कचरा वेचणाऱ्यांचे कागद काच पत्रा कष्टकरी पंचायत (केकेपीकेपी) संघटनेचे आयोजक सुमनयांच्या समुदायात आले होते. त्यांनी विविध गोष्टी स्पष्ट करून त्यांना त्याचे फायदे सांगितले. त्यामध्ये स्त्रोत म्हणून कचऱ्यापर्यंत कसे पोहचायचे, समान वेळेसाठी पैसे, कमी कामाचे तास, स्वच्छ कार्य स्थिती आणि विमा. त्यांच्या शेजाऱ्यांपैकी अनेकांनी त्यांना त्या संघटनेचे सदस्य बनण्यापासून परावृत्त केले, पण सुमन यांनी समाजातील काही इतर लोकांबरोबर केकेपीकेपीमध्ये सामील होण्याचा निर्णय घेतला आणि त्यांनी कधीही निर्णय घेतल्याबद्दल अजिबात नाराजी दाखवली नाही.

Suman More a waste picker in Pune, India. Her parents had migrated to Pune from their village in search of work and began waste picking. She started waste picking with them when she was about 13 years old. While Suman’s husband also contributed to the finances, their main source of income was waste picking.
When Suman started work she would pick up recyclable waste on the roadside, in local waste depositories or public waste bins. She walked long distances and worked from dawn to dusk. Her children helped sort the waste at home because sorted waste offered a better price.
In 1992-93, organizers of the KKPKP trade union of waste pickers came to Suman’s community to talk about the need to organize. They explained that the benefits of organizing included access to waste at source, fewer hours of work for the same amount of money, cleaner working conditions, and insurance. Many of her neighbours discouraged her from becoming a member but Suman decided to join KKPKP with a few other people in the community and has never regretted her decision.
