When we first got the call about a cat struggling to survive in the snow, his back legs twisted at unnatural angles, our hearts dropped. We knew we didn’t have a second to waste. Temperatures were already below zero, and Footloose was still out there, dragging himself across the ice in a collar that suggested he once belonged to someone. We don’t know how long he’d been abandoned, but seeing him fight to live despite everything broke our hearts. All this sweet boy needed was someone to take a chance on him.

Now, Footloose is finally safe in our care, but his fight for a better life is far from over. Our medical team is working urgently to understand what caused his condition. X-rays revealed concerning abnormalities and even possible metal fragments, raising the devastating possibility that he may have been shot. Whether his condition is congenital or the aftermath of a traumatic encounter, Footloose’s legs need expert evaluation, and we have an orthopedic consult scheduled this Thursday to determine if surgery or comfort-focused treatment can help him live without pain.

As rescuers, it’s crushing to see such a sweet soul endure so much. Footloose can’t safely navigate a cage, so he’s currently living in our shelter bathroom as his care costs continue to climb. His initial vetting alone exceeded $800, and the upcoming orthopedic appointment will add significantly more. We want so badly to give Footloose every option, but we can’t cover this level of intensive care without help.
