The United States launched a broad retaliatory operation against ISIS positions in central Syria, striking more than 70 locations using fighter aircraft, attack helicopters, artillery units, and precision-guided weapons. The assault followed an ISIS-affiliated attack near Palmyra that left two U.S. service members and a civilian interpreter dead. Supported by Jordanian air assets, U.S. forces targeted ISIS fighters, weapons stockpiles, training facilities, and supply networks across remote desert regions. President Donald Trump stated that any threat to American personnel would be answered with decisive and overwhelming military force.

Despite the collapse of ISIS’s self-declared caliphate in 2019 and the death of its leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the group has adapted rather than disappeared. ISIS now operates as a decentralized insurgency, relying on small mobile cells, desert hideouts, and persistent online recruitment and propaganda. The organization continues to carry out ambushes, bombings, and targeted attacks aimed at destabilizing the region.

With an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 ISIS fighters still active across Syria and Iraq, and ongoing uncertainty following Syria’s political transition, U.S. officials view the strikes as both retribution and a warning. The operation sends a clear message: while ISIS no longer controls territory, it remains a dangerous threat—and the campaign to defeat it is not over.
