Can We Grow Aquarium Plants With Sand Only As The Substrate?

Some people have established fish tank with just sand as the substrate. So if they want to add aquarium plants to their tank, should they change the substrate?

I try to show whether we can use only sand as the planted tank substrate or not with this video. Also, I try to show how can we make the plants thrive. However, my ultimate goal is to make the list of aquarium plants that can be planted with just sand as the substrate.

So far the list of successful aquarium plants are:
Bacopa monnieri
Rotala rotundifolia
Cryptocoryne crispatula var. Balansae
Myriophillum aquaticum
Cryptocoryne wendtii
Alternanthera reineckii 'Rosanervig'
Rotala sp Green
Cryptocoryne parva (with low success rate)
Heteranthera zosterifolia

The list of failed plants:
Ludwigia sp Red

Pending result:
Nymphaea stelata Red
