House

I’m living in a house outa some just-so tale
Old barn red & john boat green
And wired outa knobs & tubes
Before my granddad’s time
Whenever the weather never hits’ll be fine

Sophie’s making rain
And streetlights outa paint
Patrick runs a bow
Along an arpeggio

And later on if I have lit
The fire pit I’ll set down
A thing or two to say to you now you’re gone

Today I made a cake for no one’s birthday
I rode across a bridge to no one’s song
I came upon a basking tree
Its arms were stretched out tall
With nothing but the leaves to lean 'em on

The pile of kindling wakes
The live oak windfall quakes
You can read the shapes
But not with the sun around

I’m looking at it here below
The moon I know shines on you
And thinking how you might be looking up too

Sophie’s here with me
Drinking rum & tea
Watching Patrick feed
Noodle in the studio

And down the street at IX tonight
A band I like is opening
(I think it said "free")
Let me get a sweater & we can all go
