How is it made? Hmong Reverse Appliqué!

Hmong reverse appliqué is a unique and fascinating textile art form created by the Hmong people of Southeast Asia, particularly in Laos.

Unlike regular appliqué where fabric pieces are sewn onto a base, reverse appliqué involves cutting out shapes from a top layer, revealing a different colored fabric underneath. The edges of the cutouts are then meticulously folded under and stitched down, creating a beautiful contrast and intricate designs.

Traditionally used to decorate clothing, Hmong reverse appliqué served as a marker of group identity and social status. Designs often incorporate symbolic motifs representing nature, family, and spiritual beliefs.
