In this freewheeling conversation with Islamic feminist Sheeba Aslam Fehmi on a range of issues including feminism, secularism, India's broken education system and being Muslim in the present state of our nation, the first thing Fehmi said, since we are on the Women and Gender News, was that feminism no longer attracts her. At a time when nobody from one particular community is safe, be it men, women, little children in school, in the bus, train, roads anywhere, talking about only women's rights does not mean much. She further said that "isms" don't mean much to her. So, I asked her about secularism, why has it become a slur a hated word? What does the nation’s dominant group today completely hate secularism? In reply, she made a very important point, that secularism has to be a public policy, it cannot be a personal policy. On papers this government claims that we are allocating resources to everybody equally without any religious bias but in reality, on ground the implementation is not happening, Fehmi claimed. She challenged that if we have a white paper on how many low cost housing have been allotted to Muslim applicants the reality would be evident. She openly claimed that banks in Delhi do not provide loans to applicants from what they called grey areas. Finally, we started talking about the latest viral video, and Sheeba spoke poignantly about the deep humiliation and powerlessness that child has faced and not just the child but the 200 million Muslim community has faced. She compared the incident to another recent case where a BJP affiliated man urinated on a Dalit boy. Yet another profound point she made is that the feeling of humiliation, indignation and powerlessness is worse than poverty. Whether one is poor or rich, “jaan maan aur izzat” are the “buniayadi rights” and those are being attacked by dominant forces.
