England's bowlers made the most of the conditions on a rain-hit first day of the fifth and final Test against India at The Oval on Thursday.

India, facing a must-win match, battled to 204/6 at stumps on the opening day after their top batters perished cheaply.

Karun Nair batted calmly to finish on 52 not out to keep England at bay. This was his first half-century, 3,149 days after his monumental 303 not out against England in 2016.

The in-form trio of KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja and Shubman Gill perished cheaply as the new-look England pace attack made hay on a seamer-friendly opening day.

Gus Atkinson, playing his first match of the series, trapped Yashasvi Jaiswal lbw for two as stand-in captain Ollie Pope finally got on the right side of a DRS review after 14 unsuccessful appeals last year.

Rahul, with over 500 runs to his name from the first four matches, looked relatively untroubled before playing on to Chris Woakes for 14, while Gill (21) gifted his wicket with a suicidal run-out and Jadeja was caught behind off Josh Tongue for nine.
