I honestly thought I’d invented some groundbreaking new picking technique during my warm-ups. I was ready to claim my prize... until I realized it already exists. Turns out, I was just "accidentally" discovering the logic of Economy (or Conservative) Picking.

Even though I wasn't the first to find it, the "Why" behind it completely changed how I look at the fretboard, and I think it’ll do the same for you.

The Wall We All Hit
Most of us get stuck at a certain speed because our picking hand is constantly "fighting" the strings. We’re jumping over them or resetting our position instead of just flowing through them. I slowed my playing down by 50% [01:02] and finally saw the "stutter" that was holding me back.

The "Math" of the Flow
It sounds nerdy, but it’s actually very simple:
Odd Number of Hits: Keeps you moving in the same direction.
Even Number of Hits: Flips your direction.

Once you understand this, you stop fighting physics. You’re always in the right spot for the next note without even thinking about it [06:09].
