Black on Black was a magazine television programme broadcast on Channel 4 between 1982 and 1985. Aimed at the British African-Caribbean community, it was the first programme in Britain to have a team of black television journalists. Produced by London Weekend Television and directed by Trevor Hampton, the show was presented by Beverley Anderson and later, in 1985, by Pauline Black. The programme aimed to showcase positive and diverse images of black people in Britain, countering the negative stereotypes prevalent in mainstream media. Notable feature programmes included "Ethiopia Special" (1983) which covered the 1983-1985 famine in Ethiopia, and "After the Invasion" (1983) which explored the aftermath of the US invasion of Grenada. Despite its short run, Black on Black made a significant contribution to the representation of black people in British media.




Pauline Black is an English singer, actress, and author known for her music career spanning over 40 years. She rose to prominence in the late 1970s as the lead singer of the 2 Tone ska revival band the Selecter, and released four successful singles during that time. Black has been described as possessing the best voice in 2-Tone releases, with a bewitching soprano and dramatic panache. In addition to music, she has acted in films and television. Black was born Belinda Magnus in Romford, Essex, England on October 23, 1953. She continues to work in the music industry and has been signed to labels such as 2 Tone and Chrysalis.
