Pakistan is facing one of its worst flood emergencies in decades, with more than two million people displaced across 2,200 villages since August 23. The overflowing Chenab, Ravi and Sutlej rivers have already claimed at least 33 lives in Punjab, where authorities warn the next 48 hours are critical as fresh inflows from India’s dams and heavy upstream rains are expected. At Trimmu, flood levels have crossed 550,000 cusecs and continue to rise, raising fears that when this surge converges at Panjnad, over 900,000 cusecs could flow into Sindh, triggering what officials call a “super flood.” Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has said nearly 800,000 people have already been evacuated in what she described as the largest rescue operation in Pakistan’s history, with relief camps providing food, medical care and shelter. In Sindh, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has warned that inflows of up to one million cusecs could hit Guddu and Sukkur barrages in the coming days, stressing that once floodwaters spread across the province’s low-lying areas, they will be slow to recede. Meanwhile, tragedy has struck in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa where heavy rains caused a home collapse in South Waziristan, killing a woman and her two daughters. Nationwide, the NDMA reports that since June, more than 850 people have lost their lives to rains, floods and landslides. With monsoon rains forecast to continue into September, Pakistan braces for a prolonged emergency.
