Alap in Raag Kirwani - Muzamil Hussain | Sarod

Muzamil Hussain presents an Alap in Raag Kirwani, and gives us a small taste of the beauty, complexity and depth of the sound of his sarod.

We had gathered for this session at my house with another goal in mind, but the somberness of our undertaking inspired Muzamil to play an informal variation of this meditative and melancholic midnight raag afterwards.

An alap can be roughly understood as an improvisational introduction to the emotion and melody of the raag in question, without a rhythmic dimension or accompanists.

About the artist: Muzamil is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist and an emerging talent of the classical music scene of Pakistan. He started his career as a guitarist and is an avid player of gypsy jazz. He also has the distinction of being at the forefront of reviving the sarod in Pakistan. We are all so grateful that he has now taken on the enormous challenge of mastering this heavenly sounding, fretless instrument!

His father, one of Pakistan's very best bansuri players, Akmal Qadri remarked to me once that he believes that Muzamil is the true carrier of the musical soul of their ancestor - the mythical, wandering iktara player Sain Marna. I see his point.
