Why I detest the African practice of sending money home: Elsa Majimbo.


Popular Kenyan comedian and internet sensation Elsa Majimbo has voiced her strong disapproval of the common African tradition of sending money back home to extended family.

Majimbo publicly attacked the custom of giving money to relatives in an Instagram post, saying that she "absolutely hates" it and that it places an unjust cultural burden on Africans who work overseas. Elsa Majimbo has received appreciation for her honesty from some, but criticism has also been levelled at her for seemingly disregarding a strongly culturally embedded tradition.

She said, “Sending money back home to your extended family is such a common African practice that I absolutely hate. I so much hate my dad doing it, and I don’t even know any of my extended family.

"I witnessed him doing it with his grandparents, brothers, sisters, and other family members. They expect you to split that money as long as you work.I already knew I would never take part in that, therefore that is something I would not be doing. How, exactly, do you inform me that my children are hungry? Yes, they are as a result of your laziness.

Get a job, get off your ass, and feed your children. This extended family is there. Even before I was born, she would come to my dad and beg for money. She requested money by text message.
