The Code on Social Security, 2019 was introduced in Lok Sabha by the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Mr Santosh Kumar Gangwar, on December 11, 2019. It replaces nine laws related to social security, including the Employees’ Provident Fund Act, 1952, the Maternity Benefit Act, 1961 and the Unorganized Workers’ Social Security Act, 2008. Social security refers to measures to ensure access to health care and the provision of income security to workers. The 9 different legislations presently governing the social security benefits are subsumed into one single code, viz., Code on Social Security. These social security benefits are administered by various bodies.
