The Russian Air Force, officially part of the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) since 2015, is one of the largest and most powerful air arms in the world. It is tasked with air defense, strategic bombing, ground attack, transport, reconnaissance, and space-related missions.
Formed after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the force inherited vast numbers of aircraft, bases, and experienced personnel. Its headquarters is in Moscow, and it operates through several military districts with numerous airbases across Russia. The fleet includes a wide variety of aircraft: Su-27/30/34/35 fighters, Su-57 stealth fighters, MiG-29/31 interceptors, Tu-95 and Tu-160 strategic bombers, Il-76 transports, and a large helicopter force (Mi-8, Mi-24/35, Ka-52, Mi-28). It also deploys advanced air defense systems like the S-400.

The Russian Air Force has been heavily involved in modern conflicts, including operations in Syria and the war in Ukraine, showcasing both its strengths and logistical challenges. It remains a central pillar of Russia’s military power and global strategic reach.
