KAIZEN

What is it?

This throwing knife is a collaboration project I made with Delta2alpha. A throwing knife design can’t get simpler and more minimalistic than this.

Kaizen is a kiridashi type of knife. Kiridashi is japanese word meaning ’to cut off’. Kiridashis are japanese multipurpose utility knives.

Story behind the name

Kaizen is also a Japanese word meaning constant improvment. When I started to practice knife throwing I had no idea how deep its’ rabbit hole goes. When you throw a lot you began to notice more and more new details. New questions arise and you want to find out the answers. It’s a journey where you move forward, back and forth, end up in a dead end, regress, get realizations and dissapointments. This process has taught me humility. And after 7 seven years of throwing I must admit that I have just scratched the surface. Throwing motion is a complicated whole-body movement and when you add no spin methdod to this, things get even more tricky. Some people say that they don’t care, they just have fun and this is ok but it’s not for me. I like to know what is going in the throw and what kind of throw is for me.

Is it a good knife?

Kaizen is an excellent BUK (back up knife) thrower for several reasons. It’s slim. Slim knives are aerodynamic. Kaizen is center balanced knife which means the knife behaves in a balanced way when thrown in the air. Handle-heavy or tip heavy knives can be more or less wild cards what it comes to throwing performance.

The bottom edges may feel a bit pointy at first but in time they become more dull or you can file them as round as you want.
