In this video, Diana Bytyqi, DNP, FNP-C discusses the classes of medications that work for both managing blood sugar levels but also help people with weight loss. These medications were not initially studied for weight loss but were realized to help people lose weight in addition to helping them control blood sugar levels. There are four different classes of medications that are used for diabetes management, however, now some of these classes have been approved for weight loss as well. The first class discussed in the GLP 1 receptor agonist class. In this class, there is Ozempic, Trulicity, Rybelsus, Wegovy and less commonly used, Bydureon and Victoza. These medications are not only helping with blood sugar management for diabetics but also helping with weight loss.
The second class is SGLT2 inhibitor family which includes Jardiance, Farxiga, Invokana and Steglatro. This class helps by helping get rid of extra "sugar" through the urine. Therefore, we have seen some weight loss with this class as well.
Metformin is the third class. Metformin is the most commonly prescribed anti diabetic medication in the world. Some people using metformin actually lose some weight as it helps improve insulin sensitivity and reduce insulin resistance.
The fourth class is by far the most effective in helping with weight loss. This class includes the medications like Mounjaro and Zepbound.
