Polymer clay canes tips & tricks

For polymer clay canes, it is best to use hard clay grades. The harder the clay, the less the reed deforms when shrinking. Better to use Cernit and Fimo polymer clay for making canes, especially for canes for oranges, lemons, etc.

Be sure to let the canes cool slightly before shrinking. The fact is that the cane immediately after creation has a different temperature of the clay in the center and at the edges. So, if you immediately start to reduce this, the outer warmer and softer layers will deform more than the central ones, and the proportions of your cane will be disturbed.

You should also let the polymer clay canes cool before cutting. You can put the cane in the freezer for 15-20 minutes and then chop it. If a polymer clay cane wrinkles and deforms when slicing, it is not cool enough or you are not using a sharp enough blade. Better to have one sharp blade just for walking sticks. Never use this blade to cut clay from the stand. This makes the blade dull too quickly.
