Sartor Resartus. By Thomas Carlyle. Full Audiobook
Sartor Resartus is a novel by Thomas Carlyle, first published as a serial in Fraser's Magazine in November 1833 – August 1834. The novel purports to be a commentary on the thought and early life of a German philosopher called Diogenes Teufelsdröckh, author of a tome entitled Clothes: Their Origin and Influence. The novel is divided into three books and is a parody of Hegel and of German Idealism more generally.

The novel is a philosophical work that explores the fundamental problem of the modern world and models a solution to that problem. The problem is one of adapting to an "anomic" (normless) environment and the sufferings that result from hindrances to successful adaptation. The solution it models is one of "revolutionary biodicy" .

The novel is written in a tone of intense and imaginative irony. The idea of Sartor Resartus is from Swift (whose Tale of a Tub supplies the tailor metaphor). But Carlyle makes use of it to express the doctrines of German transcendentalism. He is concerned to pierce through the exterior to the inward essence.

The novel is a unique blend of fact and fiction, satire and seriousness, fantasy and history, filled with self-aware commentary on its own tropes and structure. It explores social injustice, the right way of living in the world, and the large questions of faith and understanding.

In conclusion, Sartor Resartus is a philosophical novel that explores the fundamental problem of the modern world and models a solution to that problem. It is a unique blend of fact and fiction, satire and seriousness, fantasy and history, filled with self-aware commentary on its own tropes and structure. It is a must-read for anyone interested in philosophy, history, and literature.
